DES MOINES (AP) -
A bill has been introduced to the legislature by U.S. Representative Bruce Braley that would help restore funding to efforts to eliminate the emerald ash borer.
Braley says he introduced the legislation on Wednesday, which would restore $37 million to the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s office.
That money would be used to research ways to fight the bug.
The measure would also fund grant programs to local communities that are trying to limit the EAB’s spread; Braley says Iowa should see the same funding as other states when they first dealt with their infestations.
The EAB has been confirmed in at least eight Iowa counties in the state.
