MADISON (WKOW) -- 15 of the top 20 legislative fundraisers in 2013 were Republican candidates or GOP campaign committees according a new report released by the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign Wednesday morning.

Republican legislative committees raised twice as much as their Democratic counterparts – $2.36 million versus $1.17 million. Per capita, that averages out to $28,448 for each Republican legislator and $20,803 for each Democratic legislator.

The top four legislators for fundraising were all Republicans, led by Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, who raised more than $170,254 in 2013.  The top Democrat was Rep. Penny Bernard-Schaber of Appleton, who raised $80,086 in her race to unseat Sen. Mike Ellis (R-Neenah).

But Sen. Ellis has about twice as much cash on hand as Bernard-Schaber, with $182,200 in his campaign account to Bernard-Schaber's $93,022.

Again, Sen. Fitzgerald leads the way for cash on hand, with $281,015.  In all, four Republican candidates have more cash in their accounts than the Assembly Democratic and Senate Democratic Campaign Committees.
