NEW DETAILS: Day and a half of alcohol and meth preceded fatal stabbing

TAMA COUNTY (KWWL) - Authorities say a day and a half of drinking alcohol and smoking meth preceded a fatal stabbing on the Meskwaki Settlement Monday afternoon.

Jonathan Curtis Youngbear, 20, is charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of 17-year-old Severn Daniel Jefferson.

Jefferson was found at 1695 340th Street on the Meskwaki Nation Settlement in Tama at around 4:52 p.m. Monday suffering from a stab wound to the chest.

The criminal complaint says that Youngbear and Jefferson had an argument after they had spent nearly a day and a half smoking meth and drinking with other people.

The complaint says a witness told authorities that while Jefferson was sitting on the couch, Youngbear came up behind the witness, put his finger to the witness's mouth like he was telling the witness to be quiet, and then stabbed Jefferson in the chest with a knife.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed by the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner on Tuesday.

Youngbear, who was arrested early Tuesday morning, is currently being held in the Tama County jail. He faces life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted.

Youngbear made his initial appearance in court on Tuesday morning.
