Ice melt in short supply in many eastern Iowa stores

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A shortage of ice melt has left some eastern Iowa store shelves bare.

More people are buying salt to melt the ice on their sidewalks and driveways after Thursday's ice and snow.

Ridgeway True Value in Waterloo is just one of those stores with bare shelves.

Store managers say supplies are low from distributors because of more snow and ice in other parts of the country.

Retailers urge customers to use as little salt as possible on their sidewalks.

Even though they might not melt the ice, alternatives to ice melt include kitty litter, sand and water softener salt to help with traction.
