DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Class 2-A opened the 20-14 state wrestling tournament -- and it was a good day for the Union Knights --

2-time champ Max Thomsen opened his quest for a 3rd with a quick pin against Van Meter's Chase Wyant --

while freshman 106 ponder Derek Holschlag helped the Knights to 3rd in the standings with a pin in his first state tourney experience --

A lot of area athletes ended their matches early on Thursday --

New Hampton's Connor Cleveland opened with a fall at 106 --

Chase Straw of Independence -- the undefeated 145 pounder -- stayed that way with a 3rd period pin as he chases gold. 

Dalton Lape of North Fayette Valley put his opponent down at heavyweight to move to the quarters --

while Sam Phillips of West Delaware -- helped the Hawks to 8th place after day 1 taking out Greene County's Dylan Forkner --
