Woman accused of kidnapping discharged from Army Reserves

Kristen Smith, the woman charged with kidnapping Kayden Powell, her newborn nephew, was involuntarily removed from military duty according to the U.S. Army Reserve.
Military officials say that she served in an Army Reserve in Wisconsin for about a year starting in December of 2011 but she was discharged a year later.
An Army spokesman says they cannot discuss why she was discharged; however, being discharged one year into an 8-year commitment is a sign of a major problem.
Smith was scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Iowa on Thursday, but the hearing was waived.
She is expected at a hearing in Wisconsin on Friday.
