Bellevue fire department's equipment damaged after station fire

Posted: Updated:

A fire at the Bellevue fire station damaged firefighters' equipment and gear but injured nobody.

City administrator Loras Herrig said the fire happened just before 7 a.m. and took about half an hour to extinguish.

Bellevue's all-volunteer department responded to its own station, along with crews from Maquoketa, Springbrook and Preston, as well as Bellevue's police department and EMS.

The station's building sustained some damage, and the fire impacted an antique fire truck as well as Bellevue's fire and rescue boat. As of Thursday afternoon, Herrig said he didn't yet have an estimate on the cost of the damages.

He said the cause of the fire is also not yet known, but the fire department is currently operational.

Responding to a fire at the fire station, Herrig said, felt to the fire fighters like responding to their own home. He said there had been some recent remodeling to the building and the volunteers there take great pride in the service.
