Man accused of killing wife wants to be let out of jail

JOHNSON COUNTY (KWWL) - A man accused with killing his wife in 1997 is asking to be released from jail due to medical issues.

John Bloomfield appeared in court Thursday. His attorney says Bloomfield has prostate cancer which has spread to other parts of his body, as well as diabetes and other medical issues. Bloomfield is currently being treated by doctors at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville but wants to return to his Minnesota home to be treated by his own doctors. According to his attorney, Bloomfield has lost weight and his condition has deteriorated while in jail.

Bloomfield's attorney said if his client is released, Bloomfield will pay for a monitoring device and a friend has volunteered to serve as a third party custodian.

Attorneys with the Johnson County Attorney's office asked that Bloomfield remain in jail, saying he is being well treated by doctors here.

The judge is looking over Bloomfield's medical records and will announce his decision in a few days.

John Bloomfield was arrested in November and has been charged with murder. Police say he killed his wife, Frances, in 1997. At the time the couple were living in Iowa City. Following his wife's death, Bloomfield moved to Minnesota. That's where he was living when he was arrested.
