DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Two old eastern Iowa buildings are no longer standing in Peosta. The old St. John the Baptist school, also the former Seton school building, and the St. John the Baptist Rectory in Peosta were demolished this week.

Officials with St. John the Baptist Catholic Church said the buildings had been vacant for a couple of years.

Father John Haugen is one of the sacramental priest for St. John the Baptist Church in Peosta.

"The school has been vacant for 4 years now and the old rectory, which was the office building, was vacant for 2 years." Haugen said Wednesday afternoon.

Haugen said demolish of the buildings was just to costly for the parish.

"We didn't want them sitting vacant, it was dangerous and a liability as well. Besides this will pave the way for the future, whatever that may hold." Haugen said.

Demolition of the buildings began on Tuesday after eight local contractors volunteered to help with the demolition.

"It's amazing how people come together and work," Haugen said. "To hire this outside and have it all done, it would have been very expensive and a real burden to the parish. This way it's time and materials, a lot of it is, but really it's a great way to work together."

Officials with the parish say old buildings site will be used as a parking lot for St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
