Eastern Iowa schools say snow days are piling up

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - With more snow expected, some eastern Iowa school districts might reach their limit of snow make-up days.

The Cedar Rapids Community School District has already used six of the seven built in days to the school calendar.

David Benson, the Superintendent says it's been a rough winter and the worst he's seen in the five years he's been with the district.

"The school district's had a rough winter, we've had fog, we've had some ice problems, and we've had snow."

Benson says as of Wednesday, students will be in school through mid-June, four school days longer than originally planned.

By law students are required to be in school 180 days out of the year.

Jennifer Smith has two kids in the district and says if there's one thing school districts can't escape, it's definitely old man winter.

"This is what happens," said Smith. "I know the kids get kind of tired that they have to stay in school longer, but that's just where we live and something we have to deal with when it comes along."

Benson says there has also been high utility use due to freezing temperatures this season, but he says their funds are generally sufficient for that.

This district plans to discuss the calendar during Monday's board meeting.

"Certainly we have the opportunity for spring break or Saturday's or we can just stay on the current schedule and I'm sure that regardless when the school year ends, they'll keep the students busy and engaged in meaningful activities."

While Benson says he can't speak for the board as a whole, Saturday classes could be an option.

The district will probably be adjusting the end-of-the-year calendar through April, depending on the weather.
