Sedentary time raises disability risk in seniors

Posted: Updated:

A new study shows too much sedentary time in older age raises the risk of a major disability, regardless of exercise habits.

The study, out of Northwestern University, and published in the "Journal of Physical Activity and Health," followed more than 2,000 seniors with similar health and who did the same amount of moderate daily exercise and found just one additional hour of sedentary time each day was linked to double the risk of disability.

Experts say older adults need to cut down on the amount of time they spend sitting, even if they exercise daily. They suggest standing up while talking on the phone, walking around the house more often, taking stairs rather than the elevator and cutting down on TV and computer time.
