Local schools head to Des Moines for State Wrestling Tournament

WATERLOO (KWWL) - Thousands are traveling to Des Moines from across Iowa as the State High School Wrestling Tournament gets underway at the Wells Fargo Center.

Waterloo East High School wrestling coach Jay Llewellyn heads to Des Moines Wednesday night with the school's two wrestlers who will be participating in the tournament.

Llewellyn has coached the sport for 29 years, and used to wrestle himself. This is his first year coaching at East, but he's not new to the State Tournament; he said he's been every year for those past 29.

He said wrestling is one of the most popular sports in Iowa, not a surprise to many.

"This isn't California, so there's not much to do in the wintertime," he joked.

He gives the same advice to his wrestlers each year as the tournament approaches.

"Wrestle hard and do your best," Llewellyn said. "That's all I can ask for."

Llewellyn said the Saturday Finals are already sold out, but folks can attend and survey the matches up until the weekend.
