CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -
The man who admitted to shooting his Cedar Rapids neighbor in 2012 was sentenced in court Tuesday.
Joseph Pham, 44, will spend seven years in prison after shooting and injuring Brian Wilson.
Pham was found guilty of intimidation with a dangerous weapon and reckless use of a firearm.
Judge Mitchell Turner sentenced Pham to the longest time possible for the charges.
"The bottom line is you shot into a house with a 5-year-old and 7-year-old." said Turner. " I cannot imagine a worse decision that could have been made on that night."
The victims, Brian Wilson and Tracy Moses say the sentence is just not enough.
"I don't think it's nearly enough," said Wilson. "How can you step into somebody's yard, try to kill them and their family, and only do seven years. He knew what he was doing from the time he got the hand gun permit until he pulled the trigger."
In June 2012, Pham allegedly had an argument with his former neighbors, Wilson and Moses, on the southwest side of Cedar Rapids.
The argument led to Pham shooting Wilson with children inside the home.
"To have them see the things they saw that day, is really traumatic," said Moses.
Pham pleaded guilty in January to lesser charges in a deal with prosecutors.
Pham will have to serve a mandatory minimum of five years before being eligible for parole.
"I have all the emotional scars and I have the physical scars and everything else, but i refuse to let what happen control the rest of my life," said Wilson. [He's] going to prison, granted it's not long enough but at least he's going to prison."
