Minimum wage boost bill earns approval

DES MOINES (KWWL) -
Legislation to raise the state's minimum wage has earned preliminary approval in the Senate.
The bill would gradually raise the wage from $7.25 an hour to $10.10 an hour; Tuesday it won backing in a Senate subcommittee.
Supporters of the bill, however, believe it will have a difficult time passing through the Republican-controlled House.
Supporters also argue that the wage raise would help low-income families by reducing their dependence on public assistance programs.
Business groups oppose the bill arguing that employers would have to fire workers or reduce hours.
