Panel approves harsher texting while driving bill

Posted: Updated:
DES MOINES (KWWL) -
Lawmakers in Iowa have granted initial approval of a bill that would tighten texting while driving restrictions.
A subcommittee in the senate approved the measure unanimously on Tuesday.
Current state law prohibits texting while driving, but authorities say they can only enforce the law if they pull the driver over for a different infraction-like speeding.
The proposed bill would allow police to stop a driver suspected of texting and driving, even if there isn't another violation.
The measure will move to the full Senate Transportation Committee on Thursday.
