Girls learn about engineering at Rockwell Collins

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Some eighth grade girls got to learn what it's like to be an engineer. Tuesday was the 13th annual "Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day" at Rockwell Collins.

Students learned what it's like to fly a plane and even got to build a prosthetic hand.

The goal is to show girls the opportunities available and inspire them to pursue a career in engineering.

"I've learned that there are lots of types of engineers and that engineers do lots of different things and that if you get an engineering degree there are lots of different things that you can do with it and turn into a career," said Megan Grimm, a student at Prairie Point Middle School.

Officials at Rockwell Collins say fewer than 20 percent of engineering degrees are earned by women. 90 students participated in the event.
