Winter weather may be to blame for slow retail business

Posted: Updated:

The U.S. Census Bureau reports January retail numbers are down, and winter weather may be to blame.

Kathryn Fain has been in the retail business for a while now.

"We have been downtown Waterloo, this will be out 29th year downtown," said Fain.

In her many years in business at the "Oh So In Boutique," Fain says traffic is usually slower during the winter months.

"It makes it a little harder. People just don't want to go out. I think it's the cold temperatures more than anything that really affects it. It's people who just say you know what I'm just not going to bother," said Fain.

Mix in the multiple days of sub-zero temperatures this year, Fain says this winter has been the worst.

"Definitely worse this year. Probably you know as far as traffic. You know probably one of the worst just because usually we get some walk-ins and what not," said Fain.

The National Retail Federation says consumers decided to take a break from shopping this January. Seasonally-adjusted numbers are down .Four percent from the month before.

Main Street Waterloo director Jeff Kurtz agrees winter doesn't help.

"Human beings are very much, their behavior is driven by the weather so this winter has been partially you know brutal on people and so they're just less likely I think to get out and about. If they do it's usually take care of business and get back inside as quickly as possible," said Kurtz.
