Students learn computer code in 24-hour marathon

Posted: Updated:

For 24 hours, students of all ages experienced what it's like to become better programmers.

From noon Saturday to noon on Sunday eastern Iowa students battled to create the best computer app or game.

It was all part of Code Day, to help more than about 50 students become better technologists and entrepreneurs.

The event offered students of all experience levels a great opportunity to meet new people and stay up all night to create the best code or game.

Sebastian Ashley, a student at Scattergood Friends School in West Branch, says his team came with no experience.

"I had a great time and I think that people can get a lot out of learning more about the computers they use every day," said Ashley

This is the second Code Day in Iowa and the first in eastern Iowa.

Organizers say they're amazed at how fast the students caught on in creating computer games.

They hope to host another Code Day in the spring.
