Nurse and firefighter Windy Anderson is dedicated to helping others

Residents at the La Porte City Nursing and Rehab Center get excited when it's time to work with Windy Anderson.

"She can get people to do things here that none of the rest of us can," said Director of Nursing Roberta "Bert" O'Shaughnessy.

Windy Anderson is a restorative nurse. She works with residents on their mobility and range of motion to make sure they're functioning at the highest level possible.

"I get the satisfaction of seeing people meet their potential and keeping it there," said Windy Anderson.

Anderson began working at the La Porte City Nursing and Rehab Center seven years ago. She was recently a nominee for Nurse of the Year through Care Initiatives, which is the company that operates the center.

"She's a valuable asset here," said O'Shaughnessy.

Windy Anderson is also an EMT and firefighter in Evansdale. In 2009, she was Firefighter of the Year. In 2010, she earned a Lifesaving Award for helping a man who went into cardiac arrest. She's also secretary and treasurer for the Fire Association.

"I love what I do," said Anderson.

Windy Anderson works with the residents in groups and one-on-one. Everyone at the center knows her for her smile and for her high fives. Anderson wants each resident to feel special and well-cared for at the center.

"Sometimes that's all they have is you, and you treat them as your grandmother or grandfather," she said.

Co-workers and residents said Anderson is hard working, positive, and fun to be around.

Anderson said it's a team effort, and she couldn't do what she does without support from her family.
