Dike-New Hartford students combine technology and fitness in new project

Posted: Updated:

Dike-New Hartford eighth graders at the middle school in New Hartford just finished a project combining technology and fitness.

"I thought it was really fun putting the music together and filming and we got to work with people we don't normally work with," said student Taylor Lehr.

At the beginning of the school year, the students got laptops. Physical Education Specialist Jann Miller also changed her curriculum this year to be more fitness based.

Miller thought it would be a good opportunity to collaborate with the computer app teacher to have the students create fitness videos.

The students worked in groups of three. The video had to be between five and seven minutes long.

"They had to include a dynamic warm-up. They had to include cardio, strength, and flexibility," said teacher Jann Miller.

The students used exercises they learned in class or found by searching online. They taped the videos during P.E. and edited them to music in another class.

"Some liked working with others, and some loved editing. Some loved the different exercises we learned in class," said Miller.

Jann Miller said the goals of the project were for the students to get moving and to have fun.

"I really promote lifetime wellness," said Miller.

Jann Miller said she was very impressed with the finished results and hopes to continue the project in the future.

You can watch some of the students' videos on the school's YouTube channel.
