Cedar Rapids Museum of Art announces new executive director

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art has announced that Sean Ulmer is their new Executive Director.

Ulmer, who was the Interim Executive Director and Curator of Collections and Exhibitions, was chosen after a national search.

"This was a thoughtful and deliberate process," CRMA Board member and Search Committee Chair Phil Lasansky, said in a written statement. "We conducted an extensive national search for our new Executive Director. There were a number of strong candidates and by the end of the process, Sean Ulmer stood out as the right person for the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art."

Ulmer, who came to the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art in 2005, has more than 20 years of curatorial experience. He was the Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the University of Michigan Museum of Art, the Assistant Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University and Exhibitions Coordinator at The Ohio State University’s Wexner Center for the Arts.

"It is indeed an honor and privilege to be named Executive Director at an institution that means so much to me," Ulmer said in a written statement. "I look forward to working with the talented staff to chart the future of the organization. We have many exciting plans to transform the museum experience and to further our mission to excite, engage, and educate through the arts."

The museum plans to celebrate the completion of its current construction project in June.
