Waterloo musician Troy Haughton hosts Valentine's Day concert

It only takes a few minutes of watching and listening to Waterloo native Troy Haughton to realize how serious he is about his music.

The 1999 graduate of West High School has seen his dreams connect him with many major recording artists -- he sang background vocals on a couple of songs by R&B performer Eric Benet -- and Haughton even sang a musical tribute to Brandy.

"I was joking with (Benet) and I told her I can sing background vocals for you -- just kind of joking around with her -- and she looked me in the eye and said, 'I tell you, you don't need to be a background singer,' she said, 'you need to be out in front.' That's pretty high words coming from a multi-Grammy winner."

On Valentine's Day, Troy Haughton will be hosting a concert at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center in Waterloo featuring the multi-platinum recording artist R-L of the popular R&B group Next.

The big night of music will also feature a live band, a steppers' dance contest, and local stars Tatum Talbert and Vashauna Evans.

Haughton will also perform some songs he recorded.

"I'm very spiritually rooted, so God is the center of everything I do," he said. "And what keeps me going is just I want to bring back that real feel-good music -- that real R&B music that people are used to listening to."
