Investigators: We may never know cause of Arlington fire

Posted: Updated:
ARLINGTON (KWWL) - A spokesman for the Iowa State Fire Marshal's Office, Ron Humphrey, said Wednesday that investigators may never know what caused a deadly house fire in Arlington last month.

"It's a terrible tragedy," he said.

Humphrey said it will likely be impossible to determine what caused the fire that turned a two-story house into ashes in the early hours of Jan. 24.

However, Humphrey confirmed the five people living at 5094 F Ave. in Arlington were heating their house with space heaters.

"I know for a fact there were at least four or five space heaters there," he said, adding that investigators still can't determine whether those space heaters were the root cause of the fire because all the evidence is destroyed.

"It's a possibility, but we can't say for 100 percent," he said.

Humphrey did not know whether smoke detectors were in the house.

Humphrey said, even though investigators will likely never know the cause of the deadly fire, the case remains open.
