IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Four residents are out of a home after a fire broke out in an apartment building Tuesday morning in Iowa City.

Ryan Keillor, a 2nd floor resident of the complex said he had to jump from his window.

"My first instinct was to open the door and see if I could escape and rush out, but a huge cloud of smoke came in," said Keillor.

He said he then grabbed his shoes and coat quickly and jumped out of the window.

Keillor says it was around 9:30 Tuesday morning when he woke up and discovered the smoke sweeping from underneath his apartment door.

That's around the same time Iowa City fire crews got the call of the reported fire.

Once crews arrived they noticed light smoke coming from the building, but once they entered, heavy smoke was coming from the first floor laundry room.

For Keillor, it took him a while for everything to process.

However, he says it didn't take too much longer to know something was wrong.

"Then I was like oh yeah, this is kind of real," said Keillor. "So my adrenaline kicked in."

Once fire crews arrived several other residents were at third floor windows waiting to be rescued.

A maintenance worker from an adjacent apartment building helped rescue some residents.

Some of those residents still shaken up tell us the Iowa City Fire Department brought six people to safety using their ladders.

Fire crews brought the fire under control quickly and the cause is still being investigated.

The damage is estimated at $15,000.
