Posted: Updated:
Officer Greg Erie has been named the Waterloo Police Department's 2013 Officer of the Year.

Director of Safety Services Daniel J. Trelka made the announcement Monday at the Waterloo Exchange Club's luncheon.

Officer Erie, a 1998 Waterloo West High School graduate, served in the United States Marine Corp for six years before returning to Iowa and graduating from Upper Iowa University in 1998.

Officer Erie began his career with the Waterloo Police Department in March of 1995. He has worked in Patrol, as a School Resource Officer and is currently the Police Department Training Unit Coordinator.

He is also a marksman on the Tactical Unit, a certified instructor in Defensive Tactics and Use of Taser and a member of the Waterloo Police Honor Guard.

Trelka says Erie was recommended due to his work training officers and many other law enforcement personnel in Black Hawk County.

Officer Erie is married and has one child.
