20th UI Dance Marathon raises record $1.8 million

After 24-hours of no sleep or rest, the 20th Annual University of Iowa Dance Marathon is in the books.

Dancers are getting some much needed rest after they helped raised a record-breaking $1.8 million this year.

More than 2,000 people took to the dance floor this year for 24-hours to fight pediatric cancer.

"I have experienced cancer firsthand and it's not the prettiest," said marathon dancer Christine Amendola. "It just means so much to me to help these kiddos because they don't deserve it and they really just deserve the best out of life and I want to give that to them."

Over the last 20 years, the UI Dance Marathon has raised more than $14.5 million for pediatric cancer research at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

"Of course, we're always hoping to raise as much as we can possible can because that means it's just that many more families that we can help, but we're ultimately happy with whatever we're able to do," said Taylor McKee, media relations chair.

This year's event brought bands and other acts to help keep the crowd going.
