Eastern Iowa florists prepare for Valentine's Day

It's one of the busiest times of the year for many florists in eastern Iowa.  Valentine's Day is quickly approaching. Sue Butt is co-owner of Butt's Florist and Greenhouse in Dubuque. She said they have been preparing for the holiday for about three weeks.

"We are making bows and getting our window displays ready. We are also deciding what our specials are going to be," Butt said Saturday.

Butt said it can be a very busy time of year for florists. She said the toughest thing about Valentine's Day is making sure the product is up to par.

"The toughest thing about it is making sure that your quality is good. That's the toughest thing and then hoping that the day goes smoothly because one little glitch can just kind of tie up things," Butt said.

Rinda Wolff is owner of Flowers on Main in Dubuque.

"Valentine's Day is a one day event. So it's probably the hardest holiday that we have throughout the year," Wolff said.

Wolff said staff at Flowers on Main will begin making flower arrangements on Sunday. She said she already has vases and other items for Valentine's Day in stock.

"We don't get started on the arrangements because we want them as fresh as we can possibly make them for our customers," Wolff said.

Owners of both floral shops say the extra business this time of year doesn't necessarily mean more money. They say they have to hire more staff to help keep up with increased demand.
