Marion group kicks off fundraising for youth baseball complex

MARION (KWWL) -

A nonprofit planning to build a large youth baseball complex near Cedar Rapids is kicking off a $4.2 million fundraising campaign.

Prospect Meadows says it will soon start developing the 17-field complex northeast of Marion.

Organizers say they hope the site will become a destination for nearby sports leagues due to a shortage of fields in the area. The development will include a "Miracle Field" for people with disabilities.

The complex will cost $9.4 million, and organizers have not officially released information about how much they've raised so far. Linn County agreed to lease the land to Prospect Meadows for $1 annually.

Organizers are holding a private event Thursday to launch the campaign. Cedar Rapids native Ryan Sweeney, who plays for the Chicago Cubs, is an honorary co-chair.
