Lawmakers question use of state funds for voter fraud

DES MOINES (AP) -

Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz is seeking state funding to continue a voter fraud investigation, but it is not clear lawmakers will back the request.

Schultz appeared before a Senate appropriations subcommittee Tuesday, where he was questioned about using federal grant money for a two-year investigation into voter fraud in Iowa.

Schultz says he expects to spend about $240,000 in federal dollars from the Help America Vote Act. His office has requested $140,000 for the upcoming fiscal year to continue the effort.

Schultz says he will soon provide lawmakers with a report on the investigation. To date, five people have pleaded guilty to voter fraud.

Sen. Liz Mathis, a Democrat from Robins, says she would need to see more evidence of fraud to support the funding request.
