WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A fundraiser was held Saturday night for Zach Church, the man was shot by a Cedar Falls Police officer Christmas Day.

Police reports state Church was assaulting Officer Bob Anderson before Church was shot.

Friends want others to know Church is a good man.

"People make mistakes," said Caleb Stukenberg, a friend since elementary school.

"We don't know all the details obviously, but he's our brother and we want to do what we can," said Stukenberg.

Stukenberg helped organize Saturday's fundraiser at Spicoli's Bar & Grill in Waterloo, a venue where Church and his bandmates played frequently.

He said the $10 cover charge, as well as proceeds from various raffle items, will go directly to Church who does not have medical insurance.

"He's a great guy and we love him to death," said Stukenberg.

Organizers hoped to draw more than 200 people to the event.
