Linn Co. searching for man who impersonated police, mugged woman

LINN COUNTY (KWWL) - Linn County officials are asking for the public's help in finding a suspect they say impersonated a police officer and robbed a woman at gunpoint.

A woman driving north on Highway 13 near Burnett Station Road four miles south of Central City told Linn County deputies she saw red and blue flashing lights coming from a dark-colored vehicle at around 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

Believing the vehicle to be a law enforcement officer in an unmarked car, she pulled over and stopped, according to the Linn County Sheriff's Office.

A man wearing a dark coat, black gloves and a black ski mask then exited his vehicle, displayed what appeared to be a black handgun and demanded money from the woman.

After taking the woman's money, the man backed away from her vehicle. The woman then sped away from the scene and called 911.

The suspect is described as 5-feet-10-inches tall and weighing 200 pounds. The woman was unable to give other identifying characteristics, according to deputies.

Anyone who was in the area or may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact the Linn County Sheriff's Office at 319-398-3911.

Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner reminded the public that law enforcement personnel will not approach vehicles wearing ski masks.

If the public is ever unsure whether they are being pulled over by a legitimate officer, they are asked to slow down, activate their vehicle's hazard lights and drive to a well-lit area before stopping. They can also call 911 to speak with a dispatcher to ensure the vehicle stopping them is legitimate.
