Senate Dems back bill reopening Iowa Juvenile Home

Posted: Updated:

Senate Democrats say they will support a bill requiring the reopening of a Toledo juvenile treatment center.

Sen. Steve Sodders, of State Center, and other Democrats announced the proposal Thursday.

It would open the Iowa Juvenile Home, which was closed by Gov. Terry Branstad on Jan. 15 following allegations that teens were improperly treated at the center.

Sodders says his bill stems from concerns the teenager displaced when the home closed aren't getting needed care.

Sen. Jack Hatch, a Des Moines Democrat, says the bill would address problems at the home highlighted by a task force that studied the matter.

Hatch says reopening the facility would cost about $5 million just for improved education offerings.

Republican House Speaker Kraig Paulsen, of Hiawatha, says he's willing to discuss the bill.
