UI accountant fired after audit

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) - An athletic department accountant for the University of Iowa has been fired after an estimated $66,000 in Hawkeye Express ticket sales went missing.

The university’s spokesperson, Tom Moore says the former employee worked for the university since 1982.

Auditors discovered the missing funds during the summer of 2013, during a routine audit

Her firing comes after internal auditors found that the university failed to make deposits after two 2011 football games for ticket sales to the Hawkeye Express, which transports fans from Coralville to Kinnick Stadium.

In the audit report, the 2011 revenue dropped an estimated $66,000 even though Hawkeye Express ridership went up a bit, and that's something they really can't explain.

“At this stage, the investigation is still on going,” said Moore. “So at this point the staff member who was fired, was fired for not following proper cash-handling procedures.”

However, she may not necessarily be the person responsible for the missing funds Moore says, but he the investigation will help determine that.

The former employee has not been arrested or charged.

Procedures at the university have been tightened since the incident, and lately there hasn't been any issues similar to this.

The university's internal auditor's office lead the investigation with cooperation from the state auditor's office and the department of athletics.
