Parents deal with daycare closures

When daycares close in inclement weather, some parents still have to get to work, and are left scrambling for childcare.

Grin & Grow Day Care closed Monday due to severe weather. Director Michael Knapp said they don't take the decision lightly.

"I know for a handful of people it is a major problem because they may not have alternate sources to go to," Knapp said.

He said they have had to close several times this winter. But that can leave parents like Christopher Shimp in the lurch on snowy days.

"Usually when the daycare closes or something, either I have to go in late or her mom has to go in early, and that kind of hurts," Shimp said.

Shimp's three-year-old daughter attends a different daycare, which didn't respond to my request for an interview Tuesday afternoon.

But back with Knapp, he said they struggled with when to call-off in the past. Now, they make the decision based on Waterloo Schools.

"So we had to go with essentially what worked best for the majority of our clients and what we could financially afford to do," Knapp said.

He said it's a delicate balance though. They don't want to put their employees in danger getting to work, and in bad weather, many parents don't bring their kids anyway. Still, some kids need a place to go, so he recommends parents have a backup plan, like Shimp.

"It's kind of a pain, but I mean you work through it," Shimp said. "I mean, you can't leave her alone."
