Blizzard conditions affecting Dubuque, Dubuque County

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Street crews in Dubuque were working around the clock Sunday to clear up roads around the city, but still need residents' help with digging out fire hydrants.

John Klostermann, Dubuque's street and sewer maintenance supervisor, said the warmer temperatures Saturday afternoon helped with the plowing process. But he said the wind, which usually helps dry pavement, was actually working against the crews and causing drifting.

On Sunday night, some Dubuque County roads were very difficult to drive on. Some roads, including Sundown Road in Peosta, had strong whiteout conditions.

Due to the strong whiteout conditions in the area, city officials with the city of Cascade tell KWWL they have opened up their city hall to those that may be stranded.

They also say River Bend Retirement Community in Cascade has also opened their doors.

Officials with the Dubuque Public Works Department said crews will continue to work in Dubuque Sunday night through Monday morning.

Officials with the Dubuque Fire Department want to remind the community to remember to clear off fire hydrants with the large amount of snow the city has been receiving.

Rick Steines, Assistant Fire Chief in Dubuque, said clearing off those fire hydrants helps save firefighters' valuable time.

"It makes it easier for us to find the hydrant and of course to get the hose hooked up," Steines said, "We could always shovel from around it, but it makes it a lot longer response time."

Steines said members of the Dubuque Fire Department are equipped with maps to show where the hydrants are located within the Dubuque area.

"But if you have to dig through a snow bank looking for these exact locations, it can be time consuming." Steines said.
