Girl Scouts experience medical school for a day

More than 100 Girl Scouts learned about careers in medicine in Iowa City.

The Carver School of Medicine at the University of Iowa hosted a mini-medical school.

It's the third year for the program which encourages girls to enter the medical field.

The middle school aged girls dressed in surgical clothes to get some hand-on experience, from putting casts on fingers to other medical activities.

"Getting them excited, getting them here to do hands on things with current faculty, staff and students that are engaged in those things so they can get excited and maybe want to pursue a career in it," said Jackie Kleppe Williams, manager of community and STEM education for UI Healthcare.

Parents also had their own program to encourage their girls to be healthy and possibly study medicine when they get older
