Waterloo church offers free self-defense class twice a month

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

KWWL's Danielle Wagner recently put on her work out clothes and got in line to take a basic self-defense class. The class takes place every second and fourth Sunday at Cedar Valley Community Church in Waterloo. It's an informal class designed to teach adults very basic self-defense.

"Self-defense is not about fighting. It's certainly never about starting a fight. It's about how to get away from a fight," said Heather Benson.

Heather Benson started the classes about a year ago because she said she wanted to give back to the community. From 1 to 2 p.m. she teaches karate to kids, and then the adult self-defense class is from 2 to 3 p.m.

"I'm a traditional karate student, and I felt like it was laid on my heart to give back to the community and give some skills I've been taught," said Benson.

The class talked about breaking free from grips, kicking, blocking, and throwing elbows.

"We learned elbows are good for anything. Nice, tough, sharp, and pointy," said Kari Kupka.

Kari Kupka started taking the self-defense class last year. She said she wanted to learn some ways to protect herself, just in case something happens.

"You hope nothing ever does, but if something ever did you want to feel prepared. You're not going to panic. You're going to have something you can do that'll help," said Kupka.

The kids karate class and the adult self-defense class are free and open to the community. Heather Benson said she hopes the classes teach people awareness, strength, and empowerment.

The next self-defense class is Sunday, January 26th at 2 p.m. at Cedar Valley Community Church on Ansborough Avenue in Waterloo. For more information, call 319-433-4772.
