UIPD gives digital ride-along

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

You may have gotten a first-hand look of what really happens on a police officer's routine shift Wednesday, only if you're on Twitter.

The University of Iowa Police tried a "tweet-along", basically a virtual ride-along.

It's designed to let the public know what the officer is doing and what they handle on a regular basis.

"The community we serve is very engaged and very wired into social media, so it's becoming an increasing big tool not just for campus police departments, but for law enforcement in general," said public safety dispatcher Tom Nixon. "It's a way to reach the public quickly."

Nixon is the one behind tweets and he says the department wanted the public to get a glimpse of what an ordinary day is like.
