WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Area Democrats and Republicans gathered Tuesday night for caucuses in Waterloo and Cedar Rapids as well as other parts of Eastern Iowa.

Democratic Representative Bruce Braley addressed a large and stressed the importance of an energized polling base early in the campaign.

He also spoke about democrat's moral responsibility to quote -- 'retire the governor for life'

He said these sorts of gatherings build momentum.

"I think the most important thing to take away from any caucus is that you voice matters, that the people that came out here tonight know that they have the potential to make a difference," said Braley.

Braley is a candidate for U.S. Senate.

He also touched on his problems with attack ads funded by political interest groups.

Meanwhile, all 86 of Linn County's precincts met under one roof in Cedar Rapids for the Republican caucus.

Senator Charles Grassley kicked off the event, expressing his determination to make sure a republican will fill harkin's seat.

Caucus-participants also emphasized party unity as well, because there is fear of infighting between establishment republicans and the tea party could hurt candidates in the primary election.

"I think across the country, we as Republicans are looking to come back together. And that is a nation-wide initiative, it's what we're focusing on here in Linn County," said Linn County GOP Party Chair Cindy Golding.
