Sears closing Dubuque location

Posted: Updated:

Sears is closing its Dubuque location in late April. That at the Kennedy Mall.

That's according to a local store official who declined to give his name when KWWL called the store Tuesday evening.

He said this will impact the store's 50 employees, most of whom are part time, hourly workers. They'll be eligible for severance pay and will have the chance to apply for open jobs at other area Sears and Kmart stores.

The Dubuque Sears' liquidation sale will begin Feb. 7, he said.

Kennedy Mall spokesperson Joe Bell said the news is not surprising, given Sears' recent struggles.

"Their sales last year were not good," Bell said in a phone interview Tuesday evening.

He said Sears' current lease at the Kennedy Mall extends through early 2015, so this is not a matter of a non-renewal.

"The only upside to this is it does present an opportunity for us," Bell said, adding he's confident the mall will attract a fresh, new retailer sooner rather than later.
