The Future Trojans Wrestling Club meets each Monday and Wednesday evening at East High School in Waterloo.
The club was originally started by the late Willie Gadson while he was the head wrestling coach at East. When he got too busy, he passed the club on to some assistant coaches, including Ryan Sallis.
Ryan Sallis doesn't coach alone, but he's considered the voice of the club.
"None of us get paid. We do it out of love for the community and the kids. We grew up wrestling," said Ryan Sallis.
Sallis graduated from East High in 2001. He went to Wartburg College in Waverly to wrestle. Then the September 11th attacks happened. Sallis felt motivated to join the National Guard and served 22 months overseas.
The other coaches say the discipline he learned in the military is one of the key elements Sallis brings to the club.
"More militant drive.Keeping kids obedient. That's his expertise. Kids hate it for a little bit, but they get a lot out of it," said Steven Arceneaux.
"Too many people these days cut corners, and that doesn't get you through life. Hard work gets you through what you need to get through," said Ryan Sallis.
The club started off slowly, but it's growing each year.
"We only had three to four kids to start off, and it was basically our kids. As we started practicing, their friends wanted to come so that's when we started building," said Anthony Watson.
Now, about 60 kids are involved. You don't have to live in Waterloo to be part of the club. It's open to kids in pre-kindergarten through high school. Ryan Sallis hopes the club helps bring pride back to the sport of wrestling in Waterloo.
"We've got some tough little kids. Third year of the club, and we've got a handful of state place winners, champs, All-Americans. These kids are doing big things for their age," said Sallis.
Ryan Sallis said he and all the coaches are glad to give back to the community they grew up in.
Besides the Monday and Wednesday practices, a traveling team also practices on Fridays and goes to meets on weekends.
