ELY (KWWL) - A city worker is being credited for helping authorities arrest a man just shortly after he allegedly robbed a bank.

Authorities were called to the Solon State Bank in Ely just after 9 a.m. Friday morning for a reported robbery.

They say 50-year-old Robert David Dennis Melton, of Cedar Rapids, walked into the bank wearing a facemask, heavy winter clothes and a hard hat. They say he handed the teller a note demanding money, but did not display a weapon.

Officials tell KWWL that Melton left the bank after getting some money, but was followed by a City of Ely employee who was in the bank drive-thru at the time.

The employee saw Melton get in a truck and reported the information to law enforcement.

Melton was arrested a short time later at the intersection of Ivanhoe Road and Jappa Road by Linn County deputies and a Linn County Conservation officer.

Melton is charged with second degree robbery.
