Cedar Valley SportsPlex to open in downtown Waterloo

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) - The multimillion-dollar, much-anticipated attraction will sport its grand opening Friday afternoon.

Construction on the Cedar Valley SportsPlex, a $27 million facility, began in April 2012, taking close to two years to be completed.

Waterloo Mayor Buck Clark said, while one projected completion date was fall of 2013, that was an ambitious schedule.

"This is an enormous facility and it just takes a while to get all of this put together," Clark said. "The delays were expected."

The SportsPlex will be run under the direction of the City of Waterloo Leisure Services Department.

City officials said the facility is state-of-the-art, intended to have top-notch amenities. The facility includes an aquatics center, fitness area, field house, basketball courts, a golf simulator and more.

However, the facility isn't 100 percent done yet.

Clark said the basketball court floors haven't been nailed down, and the running track lanes have yet to be painted. He anticipates the courts to be done in the next four to five weeks, with the track complete sometime next week.

In terms of parking, city officials believe there will be adequate space, with lots on the north and west sides on the building along with street parking.

Clark and Leisure Services Director Paul Huting hope to attract people of all ages to the facility, including entire families.

City officials said this is one large step in revitalizing downtown Waterloo and retaining the young professional base. They also thank private donors, who gave the roughly $27 million to fund the project.

"People have pledged or given more money to this project than most of them have given to any other single project in their existence," Clark said. "People have really stepped up."

The SportsPlex grand opening is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, and the facility will be open to the public starting at 8 a.m. Saturday.
