Group shows film to oppose frac sand mining

Posted: Updated:

The Allamakee County Protectors, a group opposed to frac sand mining in the state, hosted a documentary screening tonight at the University of Northern Iowa.

The group wants to establish ordinances that will regulate any future mining operations in Northeast Iowa before the moratorium on the practice ends in July.

The mines in question would collect and refine sand to be used in hydraulic fracturing, a process which injects water and other materials underground at high pressure to release natural gas.

Allamakee County Protectors is concerned that the mines could impact property value, traffic congestion, and air pollution.
