WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A Waterloo police officer was named 2013 Team Member of the Year after taking quick action to save a stabbing victim.

Officer Kenneth Schaaf received the award at Monday's city council meeting.

According to Daniel Trelka, Director of Safety Services, Officer Schaaf responded to a stabbing on March 8, where the victim's femoral artery had been severed.

He says Schaaf immediately saw how serious the wound was and applied firm, direct pressure, slowing the bleeding and keeping the victim conscious.

According to Trelka, paramedics said that if Schaaf had not acted, the patient more than likely would have died. The victim is expected to make a full recovery.

Schaaf is also credited with saving the life of a person who went into cardiac arrest on April 17, 2011, in the area of University and Progress.

Officer Schaaf has been with the Waterloo Police Department since 2009.
