Minimum wage bill introduced into Iowa House

Posted: Updated:

A bill that would raise the state's minimum wage to $10.10 an hour was introduced into the House of Representatives Wednesday morning.

According to Rep. Pat Murphy, a Democrat from Dubuque, House File 2011 would raise the minimum wage incrementally, bringing it from the current $7.25 per hour to $10.10 per hour by January 2016.

Murphy, who is running for the congressional seat being vacated by Bruce Braley, says 20 other members of the Iowa Democratic House Caucus have co-sponsored this legislation.

Thirteen states across the country raised their minimum wage by varying degrees on Jan. 1, and California will raise theirs by $1 per hour on July 1.

Congressional Democrats and President Obama are reportedly pushing to raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $10.10 an hour by 2015.
