Gov. Terry Branstad to give Condition of the State address

DES MOINES (KWWL) - Iowa legislators are officially back to work for the 2014 session.

With a Democratic-controlled Senate and Republican-controlled House, Gov. Terry Branstad will set his agenda and address lawmakers Tuesday in his Condition of the State.

The governor told The Gazette Monday his agenda's foundations are themes of working together and cooperation. He said he's encouraged about this session, and has a "very-focused agenda."

Branstad's three proposals center around education, veterans and the economy. He said he hopes to reduce student debt, expand high-speed Internet in rural areas and crack down on school bullying.

Lawmakers seem to share this spirit of cooperation.

"It's critically important we have a very honest, forthright and comprehensive discussion," said Senate President Pam Jochum, D-Dubuque.

"Where are our opportunities to be more efficient... I think we can get a fair amount of work done," said House Speaker Kraig Paulsen, R-Hiawatha.

Both Democrats and Republicans said on their first day of work Monday they look forward to discussions and opportunities to work together in a bipartisan legislature.

Gov. Branstad will give his Condition of the State address Tuesday at 10 a.m. from the Iowa House chambers.
