WASHINGTON (AP) -

A K-9 officer in southeast Iowa is leaving the force.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office says K-9 officer Joe is retiring from duty at the end of January. He began his career in August 2007 under the guidance of Deputy Jason Schlabaugh.

Joe has participated in day-to-day operations that include routine patrol, drug investigations and search and rescue. He has also been used for outreach and education programs.

The department plans to raise money to train a new K-9.
