JEFFERSON, Texas (KWWL) -

Authorities are working to determine a suspect and a motive following a murder in east Texas.

Police found former Cyclone defensive end Jason Berryman dead at his home in Jefferson, Texas, today according to a local television station.

Berryman, 28, was the Big 12 defensive freshman of the year and the Cyclones MVP in 2003.

But several run-ins with the law would eventually lead to his premature dismissal from the Iowa State football team in 2006.

Jefferson Police say friends and family initially discovered his body.

Berryman's body has since been sent to Dallas for autopsy.
