WATERLOO (KWWL) - She's considered one of the best volleyball players in the country, and she's from Waterloo.

Haley Eckerman, 21, is a 6'3" outside hitter for the University of Texas volleyball team.

She came back to her hometown and spoke to students at Carver Academy in Waterloo on Thursday afternoon.

"I think it's great to be able to come back to a school that a lot of people down-talk," she said.

"I know there's a lot of great kids here, and they just kind of need a role model," Eckerman added.

Eckerman, a 2011 graduate of East High School, talked to students about her experiences of going from a single teen mom to a famous volleyball player.

She said while she had a great support system, a lot of people never thought she'd make it to college.

Now Eckerman is a junior at the University of Texas where she's majoring in youth and community studies and hopes to start an organization that helps teen moms.
